Use the filters to find firms that declare the work you need. Almost every business here lists roof repairs and flat roofing, and most also do guttering. Fewer offer roof cleaning, so if that's your job, filter for it first. Each listing shows where its public ratings come from and when we last checked them.
We're a directory, not an inspector. We don't vouch for or rank anyone on quality, and any paid placement is clearly marked. In a city with this much historic fabric, it's worth asking each roofer about their experience with the materials on your roof before you agree a quote. You can also send one request through the form at the bottom of the page, and we may share it with up to three roofers who cover your postcode.
Roofing in Winchester
Clay tile country. Winchester City Council's townscape assessment describes the roofs of the historic city as predominantly old red plain clay tile, with some natural slate on later buildings. Much of the centre, from the Cathedral Close and College area to Hyde, St Cross and the streets around the High Street, sits within the Winchester Conservation Area, which the council says extends north as far as Hyde and south as far as St Cross, and many buildings are listed. Repairs should match the existing tile.
Thatch in the villages. Several villages around the city, such as Sparsholt, have thatched roofs. The council's appraisals note that the traditional local thatch is long straw, and that switching to a different thatch or to concrete tiles harms the character. Thatch needs a specialist thatcher.
Suburbs and newer estates. The council's townscape assessment describes Stanmore as a large estate from the immediate post-war period, with clay tile roofs. Harestock, Weeke and Oliver's Battery are mostly post-war housing, and the assessment records both clay tile and concrete interlocking tiles in Harestock and Oliver's Battery. Badger Farm is made up of 1980s and 1990s estates.
Inland weather. Winchester is inland, so salt isn't a problem. Frost, though, can crack old porous clay tiles, and moss builds up on roofs under the city's many mature trees.
National park. Parts of Winchester district fall within the South Downs National Park, where the National Park Authority handles planning.
How to choose a roofer in Winchester
- Ask about clay plain tiles. If your house is in the centre or is listed, ask whether the roofer has worked with handmade or reclaimed clay tiles and lime mortar, and whether they can show you similar jobs.
- Ask who handles consent. For listed or conservation-area work, agree who will deal with the council before any materials change.
- For gutters, check the material. Cast iron on period homes usually needs matching, not swapping for uPVC.
- For thatch, use a thatcher. A general roofer is not a thatcher.
- Get written quotes that show scaffolding, salvaging tiles, guarantees and insurance.
