Because the list is long, the filters matter. Pick the type of work first, then check the coverage line on each listing. Some firms name particular districts, such as Bitterne, Woolston, Portswood, Millbrook or the SO19, SO31 and SO40 postcodes. Others give a radius or simply say "Southampton and nearby". A roofer on the far side of the Itchen or out past Totton may still cover you, but it's worth confirming before you book a visit.
Ratings come from named platforms such as Checkatrade, Google, Yell, MyBuilder and TrustATrader, with the date we last checked. We don't rate firms ourselves or inspect their work. Paid placements are labelled. Get more than one written quote, and read recent reviews on the firm's own profile. Or use the form at the bottom of the page, and we may share your request with up to three roofers who cover your postcode.
Roofing in Southampton
A mixed housing stock. Southampton's city centre was heavily bombed in 1940 and largely rebuilt after the war. Many of its suburbs still have Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, in Shirley, Freemantle, Portswood, St Denys and Bevois Valley. Those older homes often have natural slate roofs, shared chimney stacks, lead valleys and rear "back addition" roofs. Further out are council estates. Southampton's own archive records inter-war estates such as Merry Oak, Bassett Green and Shirley Warren, the first permanent post-war council houses at Weston Park, and larger estates built from the early 1950s at Millbrook, Harefield and Thornhill. There are also many tower blocks and low-rise flats, where roofs are managed by the council or the freeholder.
Rented homes. Around the university in Portswood, Highfield and Swaythling, many houses are let. Landlords and letting agents commission a lot of the roof and gutter work there.
Conservation areas. Southampton City Council has 20 conservation areas, including the Old Town, Bassett Green Village, Portswood Residents' Gardens and Oakmount Triangle. Portswood Residents' Gardens and Oakmount Triangle have Article 4 Directions. In Portswood Residents' Gardens, that means altering a roof that faces a road, waterway or open space, including replacing tiles or slates, needs planning permission. Check with the council before changing materials.
Waterside exposure. Homes along Southampton Water at Weston and Woolston, and beside the Itchen and Test, take more wind-driven rain than inland streets.
How to choose a roofer in Southampton
- Narrow by job first. With 70-plus firms listed, filter by service, then shortlist the ones whose coverage names your district or postcode.
- On Victorian terraces, ask about slate. Ask whether they'll use natural slate or a man-made alternative, and how they'll deal with a shared chimney or party-wall flashing.
- On flat roofs, ask what system they'll use (felt, EPDM or GRP), what the guarantee covers, and whether the deck underneath will be checked.
- Landlords: ask for photos before and after, and a written report you can keep on file.
- Get written, itemised quotes and proof of insurance before agreeing a start date.
